More than 380 researchers, about 600 national and international partners in economy, science and society and more than 300 R&D projects every year have made the University of Applied Sciences of Upper Austria number 1 among the Universities of Applied Sciences in Austria! The university covers the most current and most significant research fields of the 21st century at the four locations Hagenberg, Linz, Wels and Steyr. The special feature: Close networking with companies and institutions in practice. The Research Groups conduct research and development in exact co-ordination with the needs of the economy, a fact which guarantees rapid realization in industry as well as society. The research areas at Hagenberg are Information and Communication Systems, Quality of Life for the Elderly, Media and Knowledge Technologies and Software Technology and Applications. The research Group Embedded Systems is close connected to the bachelor degree program “Hardware-Software-Design” and to the master degree program “Embedded Systems Design”.

Hardware Software Design

This bachelor degree program integrates computer science and software development closely with hardware design and also offers additional know-how in the fields of information technology and electronics.

Methodological knowledge forms the basis for an engineer’s expert approach. Individual specialist areas are possible through a variety of elective subjects.

In the course of studies “Hardware-Software-Design”, three competencies are combined from software, electronics (hardware) and digital communication. They form an interdisciplinary unit, where (1) hardware development is dedicated to the special, integrated computer systems, including chip design, (2) software development deals with computer science and embedded software, and (3) digital communication is dedicated to networking and interaction with the environment.

Embedded Systems Design

The full-time, interdisciplinary Master’s degree program “Embedded Systems Design” covers the following aspects: expertise in the development of hardware and software, sensors, and systems networking. Students choose two of the following three specialization pathways:

  • System-on-Chip Design,
  • Embedded Computing (Embedded Systems, Cyber-Physical Systems), and
  • Systems & Signals.

The students will also be able to develop teamworking, leadership and project management skills, and select from a wide range of elective modules for further specialization.

Bachelor & Master Theses

Bachelor’s theses are independent, scientific, written work. With this work, students have the skills to work independently and with scientific methods and to clearly display the results.

Master’s theses are independent, scientific work which are based on a master project. The master thesis differs from the Bachelor thesis in the scope, the scientific depth and the results to be achieved.

Both Master’s and Bachelor’s  theses are supervised in the Embedded Systems Lab.
